Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding on the best way to care for your at-risk feet can be difficult if you don't have current objective information. The Diabetic Sock Store wants to help you make the smartest, safest choice when it comes to protecting your feet. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions regarding diabetic foot care, SmartKnit socks, and the technology and research behind them.

Don't cotton or wool socks provide the best protection for my feet?

Unfortunately not. Wearing cotton or wool socks is not recommended for diabetics who need to protect their feet. Fibers like Coolmax Lycra and high bulk acrylics are better alternatives because they wick moisture away from the skin where it can evaporate. Cotton and wool do absorb moisture, however, that moisture is retained in the sock against the foot. That moisture actually creates a breeding ground for bacteria and promotes infections and skin dampness. Wet cotton and wool fibers can become abrasive and cause blisters, which diabetics should avoid at all cost. Cotton and wool fibers lose their shape and condense much faster than synthetic fibers. Without elasticity, cotton and wool socks bunch and wrinkle causing pressure points on the foot. Corespun yarns cling to the foot like a second skin without compressing and losing their shape.

Why are seamless socks, like SmartKnit, recommended for diabetic foot care?

Seams in socks cause increased pressure on the toes that can lead to the development of blisters or abrasions. If these blisters or abrasions become infected, they could lead to something much worse - amputation. Diabetics with peripheral neuropathy (limited or no feeling in their feet) are at the greatest risk because they cannot feel these blisters or abrasions developing. Studies show that socks with a toe seam can place pressure as much as 10 times higher in the toe area than socks without seams. Wearing the right shoes is important, but seamless socks like SmartKnit, are your first and best defense between shoes and your at-risk feet.

Will diabetic socks restrict blood flow to my legs and feet?

No. Non-elastic non-binding socks are a safe choice for diabetics. Restricting circulation is always a concern for diabetics, but doctors agree that uniform compression actually promotes blood flow. That's why SmartKnit socks are "corespun" with a special blend of Dupont Coolmax® and Lycra® yarns to create a "second skin" fit without pressure. SmartKnit socks won't slip, bunch, and create blisters and discomfort. SmartKnit socks are less prone to wrinkling on the bottom of the foot reducing the development of ridges or pressure points on the bottom of the foot.

How do SmartKnit socks compare to less expensive cotton socks or other brands?

There are no other socks in the world like them. Patented SmartKnit socks are simply the smart choice in socks for diabetic foot care. SmartKnit socks use revolutionary Dupont Coolmax Lycra to wick away moisture from your skin, reducing blisters, unlike cotton that traps moisture against your skin and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and infection. Cotton is perfect for absorbent towels, but you wouldn't want to wear a wet towel on your feet.

SmartKnit socks are made the same way a caterpillar spins a cocoon, beginning at the toe and circling to the top. That means no toe seams to add extra pressure in the toe area, no bunching, no compression or circulation restriction, and no wrinkling that leads to blisters and ulcers. A totally non-restricting Halo. Top that fits all sizes and shapes without slipping down the leg and bunching in your shoe.

While other socks contain Lycra, SmartKnit socks are "corespun". This patented process completely covers the Lycra allowing the socks to stretch 4 ways (360 degrees) instead of 2 ways like other socks. The 4-way stretch provides a clingy second skin type fit for maximum protection from wrinkling that could go unnoticed on the neuropathic foot.

All this technology is combined into SmartKnit socks making them the safer smarter choice for diabetics and the sock is widely recommended by pedorthists, doctors, certified diabetes educators, and the National Association of Certified Diabetic Footwear Specialists.
